Virgil Watkins Jr.

Dedicated Public Servant and Advocate for Change

Virgil Watkins Jr. has devoted over sixteen years to serving the Macon-Bibb County community in various elected capacities. As both a city council member and county commissioner, Watkins has demonstrated exceptional leadership as the chair of the public safety and finance committees. His transformative initiatives include securing funding for the Cure Violence 'credible messengers' program, establishing local minority annual procurement goals, and actively working on jail system reforms. Beyond his public service, Watkins is a proud advocate for community development, holding degrees in Political Science and Business Administration. Currently serving as the Assoc. Broker of Watkins Real Estate Corp, Watkins is a committed leader working towards a more equitable and thriving community.

Sheknita Smith

Community Strategist, Activist, and Social Transformer

Sheknita Smith, a Macon-Bibb County native, is a seasoned executive, founder, and CEO of The People’s Advocacy Group, Inc. and owner of Infinite Solutions and Consulting Services. With over 20 years of experience in workforce development, social services, and political advocacy, Smith is committed to civic engagement, community accountability, and cultural identity restoration. Recognized for her leadership, she received the 2020 Griffith Bell Award for Community Service and completed the Aspen Institute’s Sector Strategies Academy. Holding degrees from Mercer University and Mercer’s McAfee School of Theology, Smith is also a certified Race, Equity, and Leadership professional from Harvard University. As a licensed and ordained minister, she serves at Bibb Mt Zion Baptist Church, directing Ministry Operations and Community Engagement. Smith's life mission is to disrupt systems of oppression and improve the quality of life in her community. A mother of five adult sons and nana to nine beautiful grandchildren, she combines her passion, talent, and skills to inspire others through mentorship and personal testimony. The mission of the Macon-Bibb Equity Hub is to empower the Macon-Bibb community by promoting equity and social justice. Through the dissemination of accurate and comprehensive data, the Equity Hub aims to provide individuals and organizations with the necessary tools to address systemic inequities in healthcare, education, housing, economic development, and resource access. By raising awareness and understanding of equity systems, the platform catalyzes change, inspiring action and advocacy. The mission extends beyond information sharing, as the Equity Hub strives to be an inclusive educational resource, fostering a deeper understanding of equity and race on local, state, national, and global levels. Ultimately, the mission is to create a community where everyone has equal opportunities and access to resources, contributing to a more just and equitable society in Macon-Bibb.
